Zero Kiriyuu is an orphan who was taken in by Headmaster Cross after his parents were killed by a vampire. Zero now attends Cross Academy and has the role of a guardian with his childhood friend Yuuki Cross. Their job is to make sure the Day Class does not mix with the night class, as those who attend the Night Class are vampires. Zero absolutely hates vampires, as everything he held dear was destroyed by them. He was born into a family of vampire hunters, and continues to be one while attending Cross Academy. Unfortunately, Zero himself becomes a vampire because he was bit by a pureblood, causing a major internal battle. Will Zero be able to cope with being the species he hates the most while surviving in a world with people that are constantly changing around him?
I had a really tough time deciding on a lot of things in the Vampire Knight series. I had no idea who my favorite character was, or what relationship I liked best, and more importantly, who I was going to make a shrine to. Eventually I decided that Zero was my favorite character because I feel the most emotionally attached to him. I can only imagine the hatred and disgust that he has for himself because he is a vampire hunter who was turned into a vampire because of a pureblood bite. I do not think that Zero is "emo" or some of the other adjectives floating around to describe him, I just think he is fighting a battle with himself and has been on the losing side quite a few times. I personally find him to be the most interesting male character from the series so far, and I try to wait patiently for the next chapter to be released so I can read more about him and his next actions. I probably will not work on this tribute for quite some time, because I would like the series to progress a little more, so it is currently scheduled for a winter 2008 release.
