Sagara Sanosuke is one of the only surviving members of the Sekihoutai, a group that was used and then assassinated by the Japanese government. In order to forget painful memories from his childhood, Sanosuke becomes a fighter for hire because he can forget the pain in the moment that he is fighting. One day he is hired to fight and kill the legendary Battousai, and is excited about the challenge. He and Kenshin do end up fighting, but Sanosuke loses and gets injured badly in the end. Once he admits defeat, Sanosuke decides to stop being "Zanza" the fighter for hire, and is just "Sanosuke", much like Kenshin decided to stop being the Battousai. He tags along with Kenshin, Kaoru and Yahiko and becomes one of their close and loyal companions.
Though I am not really into Rurouni Kenshin as much anymore, Sanosuke still remains shining on top of most other characters in my eyes. Sanosuke is one of my "trademark" characters that I am known very well for liking because he has been my favorite since seventh grade. Sanosuke has to be the only real goofball male character that I really like, which makes him special to me. He is rather cheap, not very book-smart and a freeloader who is always hungry, but he is very loyal, caring, strong and not afraid to speak his mind or stand up for what he believes in. Sanosuke has made me laugh, cry and everything in between, making him one of my favorite male anime characters of all time. Though I do not think about his character very much currently, it only takes me a few seconds of watching the anime or reading the manga to feel the same passion for his character that I always felt in the past, so he is still an important character for me. I really need to re-watch Rurouni Kenshin, so until that time comes, this large monster will be on hiatus. You can still view the gallery if you are looking for images, however!
