Ten years previous to the story, "Hell's Gate" appeared in Tokyo, and changed the surroundings of the area. The sky was no longer the actual sky, as the stars that shine during the night are fake. At the same time, people with supernatural powers called Contractors emerged. They are known for losing their emotions and becoming cold blooded murderers. However, each contractor must complete their obeisance in exchange for using their powers, ranging from breaking their own fingers to eating a flower. Contractors can be tracked through the fake stars, as each star corresponds to a Contractor. Hei, also known as BK-201, is such a Contractor who is desperately hunted by the police as a result of a number of murders he has been responsible for. He as well as Yin, Mao and Huang are working for a specific Syndicate, but Hei seems to have his own goals in mind.
When I was browsing the spring anime list for 2007, none of them really caught my attention until I paused to look at Darker than BLACK. Of course, that was partially because Hei looked really awesome, but I just had a strange feeling that drew me to the series. I decided that once it came out, I would give it a try since it sounded interesting. I did not realize it had come out until a short period of time after it started airing, but I fell in love with the series immediately after the first few minutes of episode one. I am obsessed with telekinesis and psychic-type powers and was absolutely ecstatic that the contractors had such neat powers that were similar to those. I could barely wait until the next week when the following episode would be released and kept re-watching the episodes that I had. Within the first few episodes, I found myself laughing, crying and definitely on the edge of my seat. I like a lot of anime series, but very few pull me in all directions emotionally like Darker than BLACK. I also normally watch some series mainly because I like a character or pairing, but the constantly unfolding story and all the characters are just so awesome in this series, I definitely watch it for the whole series itself. Darker than BLACK is definitely one of, if not my favorite anime series ever.
